Collecting all the necessary items
First of all, we need to collect the items necessary for the quest. 3 planks, 90 steel nails, an unfired bowl, a lobster pot and a piece of silk are all tradable from the Grand Exchange. You will probably not get the item immediately. Bid the highest price and leave it overnight. If you can't get any planks, they are available in a graveyard in the wilderness. Silk can also be bought from Thessalia's in Varrock. A Wizard's Mind Bomb (a drink) will be bought while we're looking for a map piece, so we don't have to worry about it now. A hammer can be obtained from any general store very cheaply.
Starting the quest
Talk to the Guildmaster, located inside the Champions' Guild, south of Varrock. Ask him for a quest and he will start you on Dragon Slayer. He will tell you to talk to Oziach, who is located in a small house west of the Edgeville bank. Now, we need to return to the Guildmaster. Ask him where the map pieces of Crandor are and where to get an anti-dragon shield. He will give you a key to Melzar's Maze.
Obtaining an anti-dragon shield
Use the "Lumbridge Home Teleport" spell and go to the 2nd floor of Lumbridge Castle. Talk to Duke Horacio, who will give you an anti-dragon shield for free. If you ever lose it, ask him again for another one.
Obtaining the map pieces
We will now work on obtaining the three map pieces. When you have them all, use them "with" each other to combine it into a map of Crandor. These map pieces can be collected in any order.
First Map Piece
Walk over to Falador. A Wizard's Mind Bomb can be bought from the Rising Sun Bar for 3 gp. Now, take the Wizard's Mind Bomb, a lobster pot, an unfired bowl and a piece of silk with you. Talk to the Oracle, who is located on the Ice Mountain. The fastest way to get there is through a bridge southwest of the monastery. Now, south of the Ice Mountain is an entrance to the Dwarven Mine. Towards the west side of the mine, there is a door with a chest behind it. Use all the items "with" the door and the door will open. Collect your map piece.
Second Map Piece
Go to Port Sarim jail. There is a goblin called Wormbrain, who has a piece of the map. You can pay him 10,000 gp for the map piece. If you can cast "telekinetic grab", kill Wormbrain with magic or ranged, and take the map piece.
Third Map Piece
This map piece is by far the hardest to get. Remember to bring your maze key and lots of supplies, because you will be coming up against a level 82 lesser demon and a level 43 magician. You will need to bring two sets of armour - ranged armour (e.g. hardleather body, leather chaps, cowl, leather vambraces) and normal armour (e.g. rune scimitar, rune chainbody and rune platelegs). I can recommend you bring a rune scimitar, Silverlight, a rune chainbody, rune platelegs, an Amulet of Power, a cape, fighting boots (or leather boots) and your maze key. You should also bring 27 items of food of either salmon, tuna or better. Unlock the door to Melzar's Maze to start.
On the ground floor, there are level 3 zombie rats. Wear your "normal armour" (mentioned above). The zombie rat with the red key spawns near the northwest door and it's a small one. Now, you have to go up the correct ladder, click here for a map all the correct ladders.
On the second floor, there are level 19 ghosts. The ghost with the key is a ghost with tentacles, which also wears a hood.
On the third floor, there are level 22 skeletons. This room is easy. Kill the skeleton with a round shield to obtain the key.
Now, climb down two floors to reach the basement. There are level 24 zombies in this room. Normally, there are only two and it's random which one has the key. Switch to your "ranged armour".

Open the blue door to face level 43 Melzar the Mad, who is aggressive. He uses melee and magic attacks. The "ranged armour" provides excellent protection against magic attacks. Sometimes while fighting, Melzar will produce a cabbage, simply ignore it or take it.

Behind the magenta door is a mighty level 82 lesser demon. Switch to your "normal armour", preferably wielding Silverlight, which weakens demons. This demon's maximum hit is 8 and brace yourself for a long fight. If you are about to die, use the brown escape door. The lesser demon will drop a green key. Go through the green door, open the chest and you will find your map piece.
Find your boat
The next step is to obtain the boat in which you will sail to Crandor. Take 90 steel nails, 3 planks, 2,000 gp and a hammer with you. Go to Port Sarim and near the very southern docks, you will find a sailor called Klarense. Buy his boat, the Lady Lumbridge, for 2,000 gp. Board the ship and go to the basement. Fix the hole in the boat using your nails and planks.
Next, go to Draynor Village. Opposite the bank is a house with a person called Ned in it. He will reluctantly agree to be the captain of your ship.
Preparation for Elvarg
We are now ready to take on the mighty dragon Elvarg. Elvarg is a bit harder than the lesser demon you came up with before.

I recommend you bring a rune weapon, a rune chainbody, rune platelegs, plenty of swordfish or lobster (swordfish much more helpful), a 4-dose strength potion and any other additions you don't mind losing. Remember to bring your anti-dragon shield, which is essential because otherwise you will get hit with 60's. Recommended additions include a full helmet, an amulet of power, leather vambraces, fighting boots and a cape. Elvarg has a slash-resistance, so a stabbing or crushing weapon is recommended, e.g. rune battleaxe, rune sword, rune mace or rune warhammer. A strength potion is not essential, but it is very helpful. A good inventory is a strength potion and 27 swordfish.
Fighting Elvarg

Go to Lady Lumbridge and sail to Crandor. Elvarg will attack your ship in a cut-scene. Cabin Boy Jenkins gets him with a 10 and dies. You will crash onto an island. Head north, past the skeletons. You will see a red exclamation mark on the minimap. Head to the end of the island, do a u-turn and head into the cave entrance.

Run past the skeletons and you will see Elvarg to the left. Do not keep going, as there are aggressive lesser demons up ahead. There are spikes acting as a barrier between Elvarg and you. Climb over the "shorter spikes" to enter Elvarg's lair.

Battle Strategies

Elvarg attacks in
two ways. She can use a standard melee attack, and a ranged
fire ball attack. Unlike most other dragons, her dragonfire
attack hits higher than her melee attack. Like most chromatic
dragons, stab and ranged attacks work better against her.
Magic or range are not recommend when fighting Elvarg since there are no safe
spots to range or mage the dragon.
Also, Elvarg's dragon breath (which she will use to attack
mages and rangers) hits higher damage than her melee attack. If you use range on the dragon,
the only weapon you can use is a
crossbow with bronze bolts, since it is one-handed, unlike a bow which is
two-handed. This allows you to be able to equip the
anti-dragon shield, essential for the quest.
If you are using mage attacks it is recommended that you use
the fire bolt spell. It is recommended that you bring at least
50 casts if you are using the fire bolt spell. Using spells below bolt level
cannot be recommended. As always, equip the anti-dragon
shield when fighting. Mages can also bring teleporting runes just in
case they may die in the battle. Spells can weaken Elvarg,
but they are not necessary. Remember to keep away from Elvarg's claw, it will do
a large amount of damage without strong adamant or rune armour.
Melee is the best choice if you want to defeat Elvarg. As with all tough
fights, I recommend you fight defensively. Have a "defence
prayer" on (e.g. rock skin or steel skin). Do not move
around when fighting her, as this will just cause you more
damage over time. Wearing the suggested armour, Elvarg maxes
out a 10 in melee.
Exiting
After defeating Elvarg, you will slice of her head. Now you must escape the island. The simplest way is to use the incredibly useful spell "Lumbridge Home Teleport". Take her head to Oziach, and you have finished the quest. Well done, you champion!
Notes: If the player talks to Ned after sailing to Crandor (does not require completion of the quest) and asks the question "How did you get back from Crandor?", Ned will simply explain "I got towed back by a passing friendly whale."
