RuneScape Armour

Wearing the correct armour helps you prolong training and gives you better chances against monsters. Armour includes any items that can be equipped and provides defence bonuses during combat. Armour reduces the chance of players taking damage and it also lessens the damage if they do get hit.

Armour comes in varieties for each combat class. There are several types of armour which we will discuss. The reason there is no one all-purpose armour is because most armours hinder other abilities, e.g. melee armour will dramatically weaken the magic cast by a mage.

To attain the items listed, players must either trade other players for them or kill monsters for them. Trading with other players includes using the Grand Exchange to buy items. The Grand Exchange is where you will find the cheapest items in one handy location. Take advantage of this as much as you can because you never know when something like this will close down.

Compatible Armour

There are a number of generic armours compatible and helpful to all combat styles (magic, melee and ranged). Here is a list.

Name Notes Picture
Leather boots -
Leather vambraces -
Cape (black) -
Amulet of power -

Notes: An amulet of power can be difficult to obtain during lower levels.

For melee combat, fighting boots are a better choice than leather boots.

Melee Armour

Melee armour is the most popular type of armour. It is generally made out of a type of metal. Melee armour is weak against magic, but very strong against melee and ranged fighting.

Here is an example of good melee armour:

Kiteshield -
Platebody -
Full helmet -
Platelegs -
Fighting boots This is a reward from the 4th level of the Stronghold of Security.

Notes: Fighting boots can be difficult to obtain during lower levels.

When collecting your reward for the Stronghold of Security, fancy boots have the same stats as fighting boots, so you can choose either. Leather boots can be a sufficient substitute for fighting boots, with only slightly weaker statistics, however, they are heavier.

Ranged Armour

Ranged armour is light armour suitable for rangers. Ranged armour is normally crafted from tanned animal hides. Ranged armour provides basic defence against melee and is very resistant to magic. Ranged armour also provides ranged attack bonuses.

Leather armour can be worn with no requirements. Here is an example of leather armour (with additional defence items):

Cowl Cowls are worn on the head.
Leather chaps -
Leather body -

At level 10 defence, players can consider wearing a hardleather body. This is harder than normal leather armour, giving it better defence. Currently, making a hardleather body is the only use for hard leather.

At level 20 ranged, rangers can wear studded chaps and coifs. At level 20 ranged and level 20 defence, rangers can wear studded body. Studded leather armour is armour of better quality than leather armour. Studded leather armour is basically adding studs to a leather body and leather chaps. Coifs aren't actually a type of studded leather armour, however it is generally associated with it because it also requires level 20 ranged to wear.

Hear is an example of studded leather armour:

Coif Coifs are worn on the head.
Studded chaps -
Studded body -

The best armour available to F2P rangers is green dragonhide armour. Players need level 40 ranged to wear green dragonhide armour, and a green dragonhide body requires level 40 defence and having completed the Dragon Slayer quest as well.

Here is an example of green dragonhide armour:

Name Notes Picture
Coif Coifs are worn on the head.
Green dragonhide vambraces These are stronger than leather vambraces.
Green dragonhide chaps -
Green dragonhide body You must complete the Dragon Slayer Quest in order to wear this armour.

Notes: Players can also consider wearing a rune medium helmet (replacing the coif). This damages their ranging capabilities by 1 point (3 points if players were considering wearing the coif, as a coif gives a ranging bonus of 2 points), but it does give much better protection against melee and ranged attacks.

The Dragon Slayer Quest is arguably the hardest quest in the whole of F2P RuneScape. Players have to take plenty of supplies and must have adequate combat capabilities. Click here for a comprehensive walkthrough on the Dragon Slayer Quest.

Magic Armour

Magic armour, like ranged armour, is generally light-weight and easy to carry. This allows mages to move around quickly when casting spells. Almost all magic armour cannot be made by players, they must be bought or collected.

Wizard items are the only magic armour available to F2P players.

Here is an example of good magic armour:

Name Notes Picture
Wizard hat (blue) Colours are only for decoration and all coloured clothing have the same bonuses.
Wizard robe (blue) -
Leather chaps Blue skirts don't give any bonuses whatsoever, so they can hardly be recommended.

Prayer Armour

Prayer isn't really a form of combat like magic or ranging, but it does have special armour to make it more effective. Prayer armour is light clothing used for ease of movement.

Here is an example of good prayer armour:

Name Notes Picture
Rune full helmet Wearing a rune full helmet requires level 40 defence.
Monk's robe (top) This item can be claimed for free on the 2nd level of the monastery if a player have level 31 prayer.
Monk's robe (bottom) Same as above.
