RuneScape Beginners Guide - After Tutorial Island
Immediately after leaving Tutorial Island
In Lumbridge - Grabbing a few items
-
Overseeing
the
goblin house in the background
You can grab an iron dagger from the nearby goblin house (or goblin hut). These items reappear, so grab another dagger when you are around there again. This will allow you to earn a bit of extra money.
The basement of Lumbridge Castle is a place of interest for new players, as it has spawns of leather boots. There are also logs on the third level of the castle. At the top of one of the gate towers, two bronze pickaxe spawns can be collected.
Checking out the bank
On the third level of Lumbridge Castle is a bank. You will find banks to be very useful, especially if you're fighting near them. You should deposit anything you took with you from Tutorial Island.
Getting better weapons and armour
My recommendations here are pretty specific. Immediately walk to Varrock, sell your bronze sword to the Varrock Swordshop and sell your wooden shield to the general store. This will get you a few extra gp. Now you can complete the first level of the Stronghold of Security (or alternatively, the Stronghold of Player Safety). The monsters are not aggressive there, so don't worry. At the end of the level you will receive 2000 gp.
Now, you can walk over to the Grand Exchange. Iron weapons and armour can be worn without any skills (i.e. as a new player), so my suggestion is to purchase full iron with an iron scimitar. You can buy an iron "armour set" at the Grand Exchange. Buying an armour set is much simpler than purchasing each item individually. A full iron armour set consists of an iron full helmet, iron platelegs, iron platebody and iron kiteshield. My estimated price of full iron armour is about 1335 gp. You can also buy your iron scimitar there for approximately 100 gp. Other useful purchases include a cape and leather vambraces.
It can sometimes be difficult to purchase full iron from the Grand Exchange. In this case, you can move around to all the specialist stores. You may need the RuneScape World Map for this. Buy an iron platebody and platelegs from Horvik's Armour Shop in Varrock, and since iron kiteshields need a long walk to be able to buy, there's normally an iron square shield in the Varrock General Store. Now, move on to Barbarian Village and buy an iron full helmet from Peksa's Helmet Shop.
The next job is to get an iron scimitar (if you could not find one at the Grand Exchange). Scimitars are quick and agile slashing weapons. You can buy one from the Grand Exchange or from Zeke's Superior Scimitars in Al Kharid for 112 gp. See the RuneScape weapons section for more information on scimitars. And finally, you are finished purchasing your weapons and armour!
Getting better weapons and armour (alternative)
I can also supply this alternative if players aren't willing to do everything in the first suggestion. From in front of Varrock Castle, you can go to the Lumbridge general store. The general store is near the furnace. Sell your wooden shield and bronze sword to the shop for some extra gp. Now, talk to the Melee Combat Tutor next to the general store. Ask for a training sword and training shield. You have earned a few extra gp and have a better weapon (the training shield is the same as the wooden shield, however the training sword is stronger than a bronze sword and is equal to a bronze longsword).
Early Quests
Talk to the cook inside Lumbridge Castle to start a cooking adventure, the Cook's Assistant quest. This quest is worth doing because it will give you a head start on your cooking level. This is a very short quest and all you need is milk, flour and an egg. Click here to see a walkthrough on the Cook's Assistant quest.
You can also start the Rune Mysteries Quest if you talk to Duke Horacio upstairs. I discuss this quest in the RuneScape mining rune essence article. Or you can click here for a quest guide.
Basic Skills - Cooking and teleporting
Certain skills will help you through your journey through RuneScape. You should probably train these skills no matter what kind of career you are going to take up in the future.
I suggest you train your cooking to about level 10-15 unless you're following a cooking career. This will allow you to easily cook healing foods like raw chicken or raw meat. You can find raw chicken in the chicken house on the way from Lumbridge to Varrock. You can find raw meat in the cow farm on the same road. These raw foods are often left by players because they no longer have any need for such foods. As you already know, you can cook these foods on fires, however, ranges give a better chance of not burning the food. There is a cooking pot next to the chicken house, which is very useful in training your cooking.
- Utilizing the spell "Lumbridge Home Teleport"
Make yourself familiar with the spell "Lumbridge Home Teleport", which you can do at level 1 magic with no runes. It will surprise you how many times things might drag you back to Lumbridge. Please note that this spell can be interrupted by combat. There are other teleports you can learn, but they require training your magic level. At level 25 magic, you can learn the useful spell "Varrock Teleport". If you think this could be useful for you, I would encourage you to train your magic level.
Taking advantage of the guides in Lumbridge
Visiting certain guides allows you to claim free items.
Melee Combat Tutor - Training sword (equal to bronze longsword) and training shield (equal to wooden shield)
Magic Combat Tutor - 30 air runes and mind runes
Ranged Combat Tutor - Training bow and training arrows
Woodsman Tutor - Bronze axe and tinderbox
Mining Tutor - Bronze pickaxe
Fishing Tutor - Small fishing net
Fighting Areas
My favourite fighting area, especially at lower levels is with the goblins across the bridge from where the game begins. Cows also give excellent experience. Click here to read more about fighting areas in my combat guide.
