RuneScape Skill Guides - Cooking

Cooking is the making of edible foods in RuneScape. Food that is made properly should heal hitpoints or give some other kind of bonus. Cooking is often bundled up with fishing because players can cook the fish that they catch.

Players can cook in different ways. They can cook their food on a fire, a spit, a cooking pot or a range. Ranges are labelled on the map as a cooking pan icon. It is important to remember that only meat and fish can be cooked on a fire for F2P players.

To cook, players have to use their food with a range or a fire. If they have more than one food item of the same kind in their inventory, a menu will ask them how many items they want to cook. Players should only be cooking raw foods as cooked foods when cooked again turn into burnt foods, which are useless.

At a low cooking level, players will burn most of their food. As they raise their cooking level, they will burn less often and eventually never burn food again for certain foods.

Training your cooking level

Level 1: Do the Cook's Assistant quest. This is an easy quest to get some early cooking experience.

Level 2: Cook raw chicken and raw meat. These are excellent foods to cook at these levels. You can find raw chicken and raw meat by killing chickens and cows respectively. More efficiently, you can collect the raw food that players leave behind. There is a cow farm full of raw meat on the way from Lumbridge to Varrock near the Al Kharid toll gate. Opposite the cow farm is a chicken barn.

Inside the chicken barn, there is a "cooking pot". Use your raw food "with" the cooking pot to cook your food. Don't drop the food you burn. When you have cooked your whole inventory, go to the bank (Lumbridge Castle 3rd level specifically) and bank it all. Now, withdraw all your burnt food as a note and drop it at the bank. This is an efficient way to get rid of burnt food fast. Now, you can repeat the process to raise your cooking level.

Level 10: Cook fishes such as trout, pike and salmon. These are easily obtainable using the fishing skill.

Level 30: Raw tuna can often be found in the Karamja General Store. Because banking the tuna is inconvenient, players simply sell it to the general store. With a small startup capital, raw tuna can be bought from the shop, cooked, and then sold back. Otherwise, fish for raw tuna on your own (using the fishing skill) to cook it.

Level 35: At level 33 you can go into the cooking guild and cook apple pies, or you can continue to cook tuna. The apples respawn in the cooking guild, and you can get wheat in a field north of the cooking guild.

Level 40: Buy raw lobsters from other players, the Grand Exchange, or fish for your own to cook. Buying them is more advisable if you want to raise levels fast, while fishing is an alternative for players without a lot of money. You can cook lobsters all the way up to level 99. Cooking swordfish is less efficient as it carries a burn rate of almost 80% at level 45 cooking.
