RuneScape Tips - The Grand Exchange

The Grand Exchange is a formal marketplace in northwest Varrock. It was released on 26 November, 2007. The marketplace allows people to sell and buy items. The bank is located within the exchange as well, allowing ease of withdrawing and depositing. RuneScape will automatically match up buying and selling offers on different or same worlds. Members are allowed 6 trading slots while free players are allowed 2.

To be able to start using the Grand Exchange, players can talk to the Grand Exchange tutor (the question mark on the map) or Brugsen Bursen, both at the south of the Grand Exchange. The Grand Exchange tutor will guide you through the simple buying and selling mechanisms and Brugsen Bursen, the founder of the exchange, will delve into the finer details of the Grand Exchange.

With buying, players list the item they want to buy and what price they're willing to pay. RuneScape limits the amount you can offer so that it is not too high and not too low. The price can only change by 5% between days. If the item they want to buy is available, the trading bar goes green and they can collect the item from any bank (by selecting 'collect' when next to a banker). If the transaction is partly complete, the bar goes orange and if the transaction failed, the bar goes red. Click here to see an example of the Grand Exchange transaction screen.

With selling, the players carry the item they want to sell on their person and put it on the Grand Exchange (they can no longer use the item while it's on the Grand Exchange). They set the price they're willing to sell for. Again, RuneScape will limit the amount you can sell for. Players can collect their money from any banker in RuneScape using the 'collect' function. Players can also using the Grand Exchange as a sort of bank, putting two items on maximum price, so there is very little chance of it being sold.

A special function of the Grand Exchange is the selling and buying of armour sets (counted as a single item). For example a bronze armour set would be a bronze platebody, bronze platelegs (or plateskirt, which is a separate armour set), a bronze full helmet and a bronze kiteshield. Note that square shields cannot be sold in an armour set.

Economic effects

The release of the Grand Exchange caused several price discrepancies. This is because many players didn't know the street price of certain items and were paying too much or too little before the Grand Exchange's release. Here are some of the price effects of the Grand Exchange.

Name From (gp) To (gp)
Rune scimitar 25000 20000
Rune battleaxe 40000 30000
Rune platebody 55000 40000
Yew Logs 350 400
