Magic is a very important skill in RuneScape. It is used in combat, and allows fast transport around the RuneScape via teleports, crafted items to be enchanted and people to make money using high alchemy.

Magic is almost exclusively done through spells. All spells require the use of runes (except of Lumbridge Home Teleport). Runes are stones with magical qualities, allowing players to cast spells. Staves are wielded on the arm (like a sword) and provide a infinite amount of runes of the type of staff. For example, wielding a staff of fire allows unlimited access to fire runes.

Magical defence is made up of 70% magic skill and 30% defence level.

The following is a list of important spells used in magic.

Telekinetic grab	33	1 air rune and 1 law rune	Grabs things not within normal reach.
Crumble Undead	39	2 air runes, 1 chaos rune and 2 earth runes	Effective against undead creatures like skeletons
Fire Blast	59	4 air runes, 1 death rune and 5 fire runes	Strongest F2P attack
Low Level Alchemy	21	3 fire runes and 1 nature rune	Converts items into coins.
Superheat Item	43	4 fire runes and 1 nature rune	Smelts like a furnace, except better with iron.
High Level Alchemy	55	5 fire runes and 1 nature rune	Converts items into more coins than the Low Level Alchemy spell.

Magic staves allows players to use an unlimited amount of runes according to the staff type.
