RuneScape Skill Guides - Runecrafting - Mining Rune Essence

 

Rune essence is an item mined in RuneScape using a pickaxe. Mining rune essence can also be called runecrafting, although I don't really think that term is accurate because some players simply mine rune essence and sell it, instead of crafting the rune essence into runes. Mining rune essence is closely related to mining ores, so you may want to see my RuneScape mining guide as well.

- Rune essence, an uncharged rune stone

Rune essence's street price has decreased from 30-40 gp to about 25-30 gp due to a recent RuneScape server change. RuneScape thought that too many people seemed to be making easy money mining rune essence and selling it.

One major advantage of mining rune essence over ore-mining is that you can mine a full inventory with only one click whereas you have to click dozens of times to be able to collect a full inventory of ores. This is because ore rocks run out and must regenerate every time you collect an ore whereas the rune essence mines have infinite rune essences.

To be able to mine rune essence, you have to complete the Rune Mysteries Quest. It's a simple quest, consisting mainly of walking, although you should use a map in order to avoid getting lost. To start the quest, go to the second floor of Lumbridge castle and talk to Duke Horacio (Duke of Lumbridge).

After you have completed the quest, you are able to mine rune essence! To mine rune essence, you first need a pickaxe. Bronze pickaxes are the easiest pickaxes to obtain. You would have received one on Tutorial Island, but if you lost it, there are bronze pickaxe respawns on the 2nd level of Lumbridge Castle. The Mining Tutor in Lumbridge will also give you one for free.

To get to the rune essence mines, you must get someone to teleport you there. The most useful place to teleport is at Aubury's Rune Shop in Varrock. Aubury will transfer you to the mines using magic. When you are done mining, you can exit through the portal and the bank is just behind the rune shop.

Wait until you have a large amount of rune essence, and then you can withdraw from the bank as a note and sell them, preferably at 25 gp per essence. Since the invention of the Grand Exchange, it is probably easier to sell it there than on the street.

Better pickaxes

When your mining level gets higher, you should purchase a better pickaxe. Stronger pickaxes allows players to mine ores faster. The specialist shop is Nurmof's Pickaxe Shop (), located in the Dwarven Mines. They even sell rune pickaxes. It is possible to purchase better pickaxes for cheaper prices from the Grand Exchange as well as sell pickaxes you no longer need for higher prices than the specialist shop will offer you.

To be able to wield stronger pickaxes, you must have a high enough attack level. To be able to mine with certain pickaxes, you need to have or be over a certain mining level. Click here to learn more about pickaxes, including their prices and types.
